Unifying Process Framework

Background

The UPF is a process unifying framework that aligns not only the domains within IT together but also aligns IT with the business.

The UPF is a business framework that is generic to businesses and applies across all sectors commercial and public. It is naturally used by IT where it is part of a business, or by IT if it operates in a market where it is servicing a number of businesses on a commercial basis.

The ‘UPF’ proposed in this series of articles will help bridging differences between the IT management domains and forster cooperation between the people working in the different domains

Overview

There are four dimensions to IT business process within the overall UPF framework.

Those dimensions are explained in a series of articles. In summary they are the

• The Core IT Governance Dimension

• The Core IT Value Chain Dimension

• The Support Dimension

• The Enabling Dimension The dimensions need to be clearly understood so that they can be and applied in a structured manner.

Our Research Director John Gibert wrote a series of articles titled Physician Heal Thyself - because IT needs to be able to 'heal itself' by aligning with the business in the same way that it has enabled most other aspects of business to align themselves.

This series of articles deals with the 'Process' side of 'business IT alignment' and addresses the silo approach taken by IT managers and professionals. IT may be more 'Process Driven' but in IT we now have a mixture of process silos and functional silos.

Other research work to be published later deals with the people and cultural issues and also with the need for integrated technology to support bITa.
